6 Purposes of Marriage

God created marriage as a blessing. From the time He gave Eve to Adam to be his bride, God has had purposes for marriage. Here are six of them in no particular order.

#1 Marriage is for companionship (Genesis 2:18).

When God created Adam, he saw he was alone. He wanted to make someone who would be a companion for him. The animals he worked with could not fulfill this longing. In Genesis 2:18 we see God used Eve to fill this loneliness.

#2 Marriage is for teamwork (Genesis 2:18).

Marriage is also made for teamwork. Adam could not fulfill all of his life long purposes by himself. He needed help from someone. Marriage is, in part, so two people can toil together and get better fruit for their labor.

#3 Marriage is for sexual enjoyment (Song of Solomon, I Cor 7:5).

Marriage is made for sexual enjoyment. It provides a God given blessing to both the male and the female. They are not supposed to withhold these blessings from each other but to use their bodies to bless each other. All through the book of Song of Solomon we are told that sexual intimacy within marriage is also for pleasure.

#4 Marriage is for joy in everyday life (Ecclesiastes 9:9, Proverbs 18:22).

Marriage is made for joy in everyday life. Life can be hard or monotonous at times. Marriage is made to give us someone to enjoy life with while we are going through the motions.

#5 Marriage is to proclaim Christ (Ephesians 5).

Marriage helps us to proclaim Christ. As we study Ephesians 5:22-33 we see that marriage is a reflection of how Jesus saves and redeems His people. A godly marriage can point people to Christ as they see what godly submission by a wife means, and what godly leadership and sacrifice by a husband looks like.

#6 Marriage is for procreation (Genesis 1:28, Psalm 127:3).

Marriage is for procreation. God has used marriage and the one flesh union to produce children. God called man in Genesis 1:28 to be fruitful and fill the earth and has never ended that assignment. A godly marriage is made to produce more humans to love, enjoy, and point to Christ.

Think About It

If you are married, are you fulfilling the purposes of marriage?

If you would like to be married, how are you growing in Christ to be the kind of person who can fulfill those purposes?

God created marriage with purposes. Fulfill those, and you will be blessed.
