Letting God Interrupt Your Plans

In our last article we looked at the fact that it is not always wrong to plan. In fact, sometimes following a plan is God’s will. You can read more about that here.

While God is for planning and following His plan, there are times God calls us to let Him interrupt our plans. There are even times, in the middle of following God’s plan, He calls us to something different.

One major reason for this is that He is not just dealing with us, but also with dozens, maybe even hundreds or thousands of people that we come into contact with. Life is not just about us. So while we think we know God’s plan, He sees so much more around us.

Isaiah 55:8-9 talks about this. It says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

God is omniscient, which means He knows everything. This isn’t just all information, but He also knows every exact detail of what will happen in the past and what will happen in the future. Sometimes He interrupts our plans because He knows something we do not, and needs to protect us from something, or keep us from stumbling or sinning.

This is a struggle for us planners. We often struggle when they are interrupted. This is a way that God can help grow our faith. At the end of the day, it is not us, but God who controls all things. Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.”

Are you someone who can’t give control over – even to God? Do you allow Him to interrupt your plans, or do you get frustrated with Him? Is this a way that God can help grow your faith?
