3 Reasons Humans Have More Value Than Animals

Many in our modern culture have a too-high view of animals and a too-low view of humans. This mentality is changing our culture as many younger people intentionally forgo having children.

Some spend as much time, if not more, caring about animals than humans. According to them, people take up too much space, expelling too much carbon and harming the environment. But no one ever makes these accusations about people’s pets.

There are three reasons that humans have more value than animals. They are made in God’s image, they have souls, and they can reason. All of this should lead us to value humans over animals.

It’s not to say that we should treat animals poorly. Proverbs 12:10 tells us that righteous people even treat their animals well. We must see, treat, and put more resources and energy into humans than animals because they have more value.

First, people are made in God’s image. In Genesis 1:26, God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Humans reflect God in a way the rest of creation cannot. We never see that animals were created in God’s image.

Second, human beings have a soul. Jesus tells us this in Matthew 10:28. While animals can be cute, they don’t have souls, are not eternal, and cannot worship. This sets us apart and above them.

Lastly, man can reason. Animals function purely on instinct. While animals can do some ingenious things, they are not the same as man and have nowhere the reasoning level man does.

Because of these three things, we know that man has more value than animals. While we should treat our animals well, we must always place more value on man than animals. God has created man special, and we should treat humans that way.
