The reliability of Scripture is something which is constantly challenged in our modern age. The question is, how do we really know we have God’s Word? Can we really trust that it is His and not man’s. There are dozens of reasons I believe we can know we have God’s perfect Word. Let me just give you four.
#1 The Bible says it is perfect. The Bible many times says it is flawless. Psalm 12:6 says “The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.” Now, this alone wouldn’t be enough to call the Bible verifiably perfect, but it’s a great start.
#2 The authors write against themselves. Many times throughout Scripture the authors write against their own desires and reveal their sins. If it was really man made, why wouldn’t the authors write in their favor? Why wouldn’t they write to their advantage? The apostle Paul says in Romans 7:15 that there are things he knows God wants from him, and he struggles to obey. The authors write in a way that upsets others, and several of them were martyred.
#3 There are thousands of archaeological finds which verify Scripture. There are many times in the middle east where items, or even whole cities are found that verify what the Scripture speaks about. Places that have been missing for thousands of years have been found verifying what has been said in Scripture.
#4 The finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In 1946 near the Dead Sea, over 15,000 pieces of scrolls were found. These scrolls included a large amount of passages of Scripture. Every book of the Bible minus the book of Esther was found in the scrolls. These scrolls were buried around 68 AD and were not touched for about 2,000 years.
What they found was that there were no major concepts changed in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Even with 2,000 years of translations from Greek in the first century, to modern English, we have the same Bible as they did during the time of Jesus and the apostles.
Think About It
Do you trust the Bible?
Do any of these give you better assurance that what you have is the Word of God, not man’s ideas?
What are other reasons you believe the Bible to be true and accurate?
