Three Blessings to God’s Eternal Existence

Ever since I was a child, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that God is eternal. A couple decades of existence, and several theology degrees later, my finite mind still struggles with comprehending this fact. While ideas like God’s sovereignty (how He is always in control) and His perfection are a little easier for us to understand, for some reason the fact that He has no beginning just sends our mind for a loop.

There are a plethora of verses which speak to God’s eternality. The psalmist in Psalm 90:2 says that “before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” The apostle Paul in Romans 16:26 calls Him the “eternal God.” Jesus Himself says in John 8:58 “before Abraham was, I am.”

If you are a Christian, you can agree that God is eternal. That He always existed. If this is the case,  what bearing does that have on your life? What does that mean to you today as a parent, student, grandparent, neighbor, or friend? Let’s look at three blessings to the fact that God has and will exist for eternity.

First, it means that He has no temporal limits. By existing forever, we know He is above and beyond everything else, including all of His creation. He can do anything He wants, both for His glory and our benefit.

Second, it means He is self-existent. This means that He is superior to all things. He answers to no one. No one can tell Him what to do, change His mind, or change how He does things. He therefore can be His perfect character of love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness.

Third, because He has no end, we can take comfort. The comfort comes in knowing that everything He has promised, He will be able to deliver. He won’t leave any project or promise unfinished. He will always be there for us.

Think About It

Do you know that God is eternal?

Do you see the benefits of Him being eternal, and rest in those ideas?
