Saint Patrick’s Call to Follow Christ

Saint Patrick is often remembered for driving the snakes out of Ireland, but his most incredible legacy is his unwavering commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Once enslaved in a foreign land, he later returned as a missionary, bringing the light of Christ to a people lost in spiritual darkness. His life and writings reveal a heart wholly devoted to the Lord, calling all to faith and repentance. If Patrick were here today, he would urge us to do the same—to put our trust in Christ for salvation and turn from sin to follow Him faithfully.

Patrick understood that salvation is found in Christ alone. He wrote, “Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.” His entire life was shaped by the truth that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). This same message rings true today: there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

But salvation is not just about intellectual belief. Salvation requires a changed life. Patrick knew that following Christ meant leaving behind sin and living in obedience. He prayed, “I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of Creation.” His faith was not passive; it was active. He called people to believe in Christ and walk in His ways.

The Bible makes this call clear. Jesus Himself said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Paul echoes this in Romans 6:11: “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” True faith is not merely saying a prayer—it is a transformation, a daily surrender to God’s will.

So what would Saint Patrick say to us today?

  1. Put your complete trust in Christ – Your good works cannot save you. Church attendance cannot save you. Only Jesus can. Have you repented and placed your faith in Him?
  2. Turn from sin – The Christian life is not about perfection, but it is about direction. Are you actively turning away from sin and striving to obey Christ?
  3. Live on mission – Patrick returned to the people who enslaved him to bring them the gospel. Who in your life needs to hear about Jesus?

Patrick’s mission was not just for Ireland but for all of us. His life was a testament to God’s power to transform hearts and nations. May we heed his example, surrender fully to Christ, and walk in the newness of life that He has given us. Let us rise today, as Patrick did, through the strength of the Lord.
