1 Corinthians · Glorify God

Making God Known and Famous

What It Means to Glorify God

What does it mean to glorify God? For over a decade and a half, I’ve used a simple definition: glorifying God means making Him known and famous. But this simple phrase carries profound depth. The Greek word for “glorify” in the New Testament is doxazō, which means giving honor, praising, or making something appear great. To glorify God is to display His greatness—to live in a way that reveals who He is to the world.

This isn’t a Sunday-only call. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, the apostle Paul writes, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Notice the all-encompassing nature of this command. We are called to glorify God in our spiritual practices and everyday moments such as how we work, speak, eat, and relate to others. Every action is an opportunity to make God known and famous.

But how can we practically live this out? It begins with our character. When we choose integrity in a dishonest world, we reflect the God of truth. When we respond gracefully in an outrage culture, we display the God of mercy. When we forgive, we reveal the God of forgiveness. These choices make God’s nature visible to those around us.

Glorifying God also means living intentionally. When you work, do so excellently, not merely for a paycheck but as an act of worship. When you serve others, do it with a heart that reflects God’s love. When you face suffering, trust God and remain faithful, showing He is your refuge. Even in the simple joy of a family meal, you can glorify God by giving thanks and recognizing Him as your provider.

This understanding of glorifying God brings faith into every part of life. Christianity is not just a set of beliefs or a Sunday ritual—it is a way of life, rooted in a relationship with the living God. When we recognize this, faith becomes practical. We are constantly given chances to make God known and famous through our lives.

The world may never know our names, but if we live to glorify God, they can come to know Him. Let this be our highest aim—that in all we do, we reveal God’s greatness, goodness, and grace.
