How to Receive Joy Despite Having Problems

Having joy is different from being happy. Happiness depends on our happenings. What goes on around us affects whether or not we are so glad. Our health, finances, relationships, spiritual state, work, or mental and emotional well-being can affect this.

Know that joy is not just a fleeting emotion. It’s a promise, a gift reserved for those who believe. It’s a promise to Christians, a reassurance that no matter what life throws at us, we can still find joy.

John documents what Jesus says about this in chapter 15, verse 11 of his gospel, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Since Joy is not guaranteed for everyone, what does Jesus mean here? Jesus refers back to everything he said in the first ten verses. This is where Jesus teaches His believers that they are branches to Him as the vine. In other words, He is the trunk, and we grow from Him. To receive His joy, we must be a part of His vine.

Jesus tells His believers to ‘abide’ in Him. This is not a one-time connection but a continuous, ongoing relationship. It’s about constantly communicating with Him, seeking His guidance, and finding our strength in Him. If you struggle to find joy, ask yourself, are you genuinely abiding in Him?

For those who are grafted into Christ and abide in Him, there is a promise of flourishing—a promise of joy. In Christ, we find renewal, Satisfaction, and wholeness. We can find joy in knowing we are always in Him, loved and accepted, regardless of life’s challenges.

Think About It

Are you in Christ? Have you accepted Him as your Savior?

Do you continue to abide in Him? If so, do you experience the joy of knowing He has saved you?

Are you constantly encouraged by Him and that He will take you to eternally be with Him one day where there will be no more pain, suffering, or sin?
