There are a lot of people who are choosing to be single these days. Choosing to be single is different from those who are single but do not want to be. These are people who do not want to be married. The long-term ramifications of this will start to be seen over the next decade or so.
The reality is that God created us for community and even more so, marriage. Does He allow a small handful of people to be single for a specific purpose? Yes. But that is not the norm.
Many young people today see a good friend as being the same as having a spouse. This is not true. Having a spouse is more important than having a friend.
God Himself believed that we needed to live in community. In Genesis 2:18 God said it wasn’t good that Adam was alone. But this loneliness was much more than needing a friend. It was needing a spouse.
If he just needed other human interaction, someone to laugh with, work with, or spend time with, God could have created another man for Adam. He could have given him a buddy. But what are we seeing in Genesis 2:22? He creates a woman for him. He creates a spouse for him. This was specific and intentional.
A spouse can provide intimacy that a friend cannot. Spouses can be fruitful together and make children together. That is something you cannot do with a friend of the same sex.
We should also note that men and women are built differently by God. God designed them with different drives, ambitions, and feelings. Having both a man and woman in a relationship makes them the power team that they are meant to be.
Millennia after Adam and Eve were created, God’s plan for marriage is still important. It still is what proved the most fruitful. It still is what provides the deepest level of companionship. As always, God’s way is best.
