A Warning to not Forget God’s Goodness

God has been good to all of us. Even those who are not His people. But He is especially good to those who are His people. You can read about this in our past article God Gives His Children Extra Blessings .

Even though we are a very blessed people, it is easy for us to forget. This is nothing new for humanity. The psalmist talks about this in Psalm 95. He starts the Psalm out by talking about how great God is, and why we should praise Him. Among these reasons he lists that God is our Savior, Creator, and Leader in life.

He then takes a sharp turn in verse 7. It almost seems like these are two different Psalms combined together. He jumps to warning people not to leave trusting God. But the reality is it can happen that quickly.

He references the story about the Israelties needing water while wandering in the wilderness. Did they really need water? Yes. But they didn’t ask God for water, they demanded it. They grumbled for what they didn’t have, instead of praying and asking God for what they needed.

This story is found in Exodus 17:1-7. Here’s where this lands in the story of the Israelites. God sent 10 plagues to get Pharoah to free the Israelites from slavery. He then does the miracle of parting the Red Sea to help them walk across. After that He crushes their enemies, Pharaoh’s army, in the Red Sea. They praise God in a song and dance. Then when they needed food God miraculously provided manna and quail for them.

At this point we may be thinking, wait, they saw all of these miracles, and then they complained. They saw God’s faithfulness, and then assumed He wouldn’t be faithful again. This seems crazy.

But if we were honest, we are a lot like the Israelites. We too have seen God’s faithfulness repeatedly in our lives. We have watched Him do miracles for us and our loved ones. And yet, we live like He will never move again. We too are tempted to be demanding towards God, and angry towards Him, instead of asking Him graciously to provide for us again.

So we should take Psalm 95 to heart. We should praise God for the many things He has done in our lives. We should thank Him for all of His great works in the past. When we face times where we feel like we don’t see Him moving, instead of demanding or acting like He has abandoned us, we should call on Him again.
