5 Tips for Killing Lust

Lust is a very strong sexual desire for someone who is not your spouse. Lust of the flesh is listed as one of the three root sins. You can read more about that our article Root Sins: Part I

Lust breaks our relationship with God, can lead us to Hell, destroys marriages, and keeps young people from building godly relationships. So how do we stop it? Here’s five tips, and one bonus, for killing lust.

1. Be broken over your sin. If you don’t hate your sin, you will love it, and want to hold on to it.

Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

2. Know what scripture has to say about lust. Hear from God how He feels about lust. Know what He has to say about it.

Psalm 119:11 “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

3. Get accountability. Lust is an easy sin to hide, at first. If we get accountability from another godly peer, it will help.

Proverbs 27:17 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

4. Understand that lust will destroy you. If we take time to see where lust leads, we will be less likely to take that path.

James 1:14-15 “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

5. Confess sin. Confessing is admitting you have a problem. Take time to tell God how you have trespassed against Him and His law.

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Bonus: Celebrate sex with your spouse often.

1 Corinthians 7:4-5

“For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. [5] Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
