The Generosity of Storing Eternal Treasure

What comes to mind when you hear the word “rich”? You may picture someone with a mansion, luxury cars, and endless wealth. But the reality is that most of us are more affluent than we realize. Compared to much of the world—historically and today—we have access to comforts and conveniences unimaginable for past generations.

So, what does God call us to do with the wealth we’ve been given? Paul tells us, “They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share” (1 Timothy 6:18).

Generosity is a defining mark of a heart that trusts in God (here). When we recognize that everything we have is a gift from Him, we hold our resources loosely. We begin to see wealth as something to enjoy and an opportunity to bless others. The more we give, the more we reflect the heart of God, who “so loved the world that He gave” (John 3:16).

But generosity is not just about giving money—it is a lifestyle. We can be generous with our time, talents, and words. Encouraging someone, offering hospitality, and volunteering to help those in need are all acts of generosity that reflect God’s love. The question is not, “How much do I have to give?” but, “How can I use what God has given me to glorify Him?”

And here’s the most incredible part: generosity has eternal rewards. Paul writes, “…thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19). Earthly wealth fades, but what we invest in God’s kingdom lasts forever. Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20).

When we give generously, we are not losing something but investing. We are participating in God’s eternal work, using temporary resources to impact lives for Christ. Whether supporting a missionary, helping a struggling family, or simply sharing what we have, generosity stores treasures that will never fade.

So, what does this mean for us today? It means looking at our wealth—big or small—as a tool for God’s purposes. It means being willing to share freely, knowing that our ultimate reward is in heaven. It means shifting our perspective from accumulating to investing—not in stocks or savings but souls and eternity.

Take a moment today to reflect:

How am I using what God has given me?

Am I building my kingdom or investing in His?

The wealth of this world will pass away, but what we offer for Christ will last forever.
