Over the years, one of the common questions about Jesus is when He began to exist. There are some, like the Muslims, Mormons, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, that believe that He was created by God the Father or just another person who was created.
In the Christian tradition, it has always been understood that Jesus was not created. However, newer Christians may sometimes have yet to learn this key difference. This is likely because they think His existence began in Bethlehem in a stable. Scripture shows us that Jesus existed in a pre-incarnate (before flesh) state.
First, Jesus is known as “The Angel of the Lord” in many Old Testament passages. This is for another study, but when passages say “The Angel” versus “an angel,” there is a solid case to believe this was Jesus’ pre-incarnation.
Second, Jesus is credited with creating the world along with the Trinity. Hebrews 1:2 says, “He created the world.” The apostle Paul in Colossians 1:16 says, “For by him all things were created…all things were created through Him and for Him.”
Third, Jesus is ruling and reigning with God the Father before the world. John talks about this in John 1:1-14. He says, “He was in the beginning with God.” In John 17, John says that Jesus was “with the glory that I had with you (God the Father) before the world existed.”
Why does this matter?
First, these verses discuss how Jesus is eternal, like God the Father.
Second, this shows that Jesus was not created, meaning He is separate from and above His creation. Because creation is never greater than the Creator, it places Jesus as a part of the Godhead to worship. He is not God’s assistant but God Himself and should be worshiped.
Think About It
Do you know that Jesus is eternal?
Do you know that He has always existed before the world?
Do you believe that He is not a creation but the Creator?
Do you give Him the worship that is due because of these things?
