Many see work as a necessary evil to endure until the weekend or retirement. The daily grind can feel like a burden, a consequence of living in a broken world. But what if we saw work differently? What if work, rather than punishment, is a gift—an opportunity to be fruitful and productive in ways that reflect God’s design?
Work Before the Fall
Work is not a result of sin. Before the fall, God gave Adam a task:
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15)
Before sin entered the world, Adam had work to do. He cultivated the land, named the animals, and cared for creation. Work was not a curse but part of God’s good plan for humanity. The struggle and frustration that often accompany work today result from sin (Genesis 3:17-19), but work itself is still good.
Work as Fruitfulness
A proper perspective on work changes everything. When we see work as a means of being fruitful rather than just a means of survival, it becomes a way to glorify God. Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
Whether you are a teacher, parent, mechanic, accountant, or artist, your work has value. It produces something, serves others, and provides for needs. Ultimately, it reflects the image of God, who is a worker Himself (John 5:17).
Redeeming Work in a Broken World
Because of sin, work can sometimes feel frustrating, exhausting, or even meaningless. But when we see work as an act of worship, it takes on eternal significance. Paul encouraged the Corinthians: “Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Your work—no matter how small or unnoticed—matters to God. Whether fixing a car, writing a report, or changing a diaper, you participate in God’s ongoing work. When you work with integrity, diligence, and a heart for others, you reflect the character of Christ.
Shifting Your Perspective
If work feels like a burden, consider these practical steps:
- Pray over your work. Ask God to help you see its value and purpose.
- Work with excellence. Even in mundane tasks, strive to honor God with diligence.
- Serve others through your work. How does your work bless others? A customer, a student, a family member?
- Rest well. Work is good, but so is rest. God modeled this in creation (Genesis 2:2-3).
Work was never meant to be a punishment. When we embrace it as an opportunity to be fruitful and honor God, it becomes a source of joy and fulfillment.
So today, work with purpose. Work with gratitude. Work as unto the Lord.
