In the book of Nahum, Israel is being enslaved by the Ninevites, who occupy the capital city of Assyria, a world power at the time. They were put there by God as punishment for rejecting God, and His ways. They had learned their lesson, and it was time for God to free them.
Nahum also tells us that the Ninevites had totally rejected God. They not only sinned among themselves as the Israelites, but they went around the world conquering other countries. They did wicked things, murdering people, stealing from them, enslaving others, and taking their land.
God saw fit to end their destruction and evil by letting them be destroyed. This did not come without warning. This was the second time this nation would receive a warning by God’s prophet. The first time was through Jonah. This time they would not repent and turn to God. God was patient with them. In fact, it would be several decades after Nahum’s warning that God would destroy the Ninevites.
This would bring comfort to God’s people. Their comfort would come through their enemies being conquered. The conquering of Nineveh meant freedom for the Israelites. It would mean that Nineveh would not come to destroy them again.
As Christians, sometimes we need a reminder that God will also take care of our enemies. At times it seems like those who are against God are winning. Other times it seems like their evil will never be stopped.
While we may feel like this at times, it is not true. God does not allow evil to go on forever. Sometimes He may stop it in this life. Other times, He will stop it in the life to come.
In Revelation 20:11-15 God tells us that He will crush all of His final enemies. They will not have power, they will not have a voice, they will not control others, influence others, or even harass believers. God will conquer all of His enemies one day, and the believer can take comfort in that.
Think About It
What are modern enemies you see set up against God, Christianity, or maybe yourself?
Do you have comfort that God will conquer His enemies one day?
Do you trust Him that He will do it, or do you think you need to take things into your own hands?
